Franchot on the Air

The Maryland Comptroller race heats up today as Delegate Peter Franchot starts airing his first ad. The beginning is a bit campy, but overall the ad is quite effective at making his point that he's the "only real Democrat" in the race.

Gag me...

He is pro-ICC. If Owens is the Queen of Sprawl (which she is), Franchot could easily be called the King of Sprawl, or atleast the King of Traffic.

I agree -- campy but effective. I do have two questions, though. What do the things Franchot cited (choice and the environment) have to do with being Maryland's chief tax collector? And with both Franchot and Owens actively in the race, are we going to end up w/ another term for Willie Don?

Good questions!

I'm not an expert by any means, but I believe in addition to being the state's tax collector, the Comptroller is a fairly powerful position - filling one of the three seats on the Board of Public Works (along with the Governor and Treasurer) which has significant control over the capital budget and other areas.

As for Schaefer, I think his best chance is a low turnout. The way things look to me right now, I don't think that will be the case. Progressive voters, a group I think will turn out in force Sept 12 (too many hot races for them to stay home), would seem to be Franchot's natural base (though he may turn some off with his endorsement of Al Wynn). I think it may be Schaefer and Owens who fight each other over the remaining votes, leaving Franchot with the plurality. It'll be close, whichever way it works out.
