Women We Need

So last week I told you about the antics of soon-to-be former Sen. Ida Ruben, slinging mud and otherwise ignoring constituents. I don't always want to be a downer, so I'd best tell you about a couple of great women running for office here in Maryland.

You've heard from others at Free State Politics about Donna Edwards, a capable, intelligent, progressive woman running for Congress from the 4th District (portions of Prince George's and Montgomery counties). I support this longtime resident, public interest advocate, foundation leader and community activist who pledges to remember that members of Congress are supposed to represent the people. Because I'm trying to be positive today, I'm not going to bash incumbent Albert Wynn for ignoring us for years, for selling out to the big money donors to vote the wrong way on important legislation, or for being exactly wrong kind of legislator we deserve. I'm just going to say that you should join me in voting for Donna Edwards.

In Montgomery County, we need a change of direction on the County Council. We need leaders like Duchy Trachtenberg who'll make sure that county government serves the interests of the people (do you see a theme developing?). Duchy has fought for the rights of women and for equality for all, and for better health care. She's got a brain and the ability to use it to get something done for us. There are a lot of people in the at-large race for four Council seats, but Duchy Trachtenberg and Marc Elrich are the clear choices. Vote Duchy!

And Marilyn Praisner has been a solid member of the Council and deserves to be reelected (ignore the silly comment at Just Up the Pike).

I hear good things about Shirley Brandman for School Board, Valerie Ervin for County Council, Ana Sol Gutierrez for Maryland Delegate (D18), but just don't know enough to recommend them at this point. I'm not going to vote for Nancy Floreen, but that's another post.
