Another Sun Poll

from The League: Reassembled

The Baltimore Sun reported today that its latest poll on the Democratic race for the open US Senate Seat in Maryland shows a dead heat between US. Rep. Ben Cardin and Former US. Rep. Kweisi Mfume. Cardin had 30% of those polled say they would vote for him in the primary, while Mfume had 28%.

This is a bit of a surprise. We expect Cardin to be pulling out ahead, but Mfume, despite the bad press, has kept pace rather well. Perhaps most surprising is the fact that Mfume has only collected $97,000 compared to Cardin's $1.5 million.

When Mfume first entered the race, he acknowledged that he would be fighting an uphill battle. From early on he has expected his campaign contributions to be only a fraction of what the other democratic candidates will collect. If Mfume can continue to garner an equal amount of support on his tiny budget, we at the League are guessing that he is going to be more of a contender then we originally assumed.

Although Mfume keeps pace with Cardin in a primary match-up, the poll shows that he would lose to Steele by 2% (39 - 37%). Cardin, on the other hand, would beat Steele by 9 points (41 - 32%).
