Bromwell Denies Charges

from
The League: Reassembled

The Baltimore Sun reports that "former state senator Thomas L. Bromwell Sr. and his wife Mary Patricia pleaded not guilty Monday in their first court appearance after federal prosecutors accused them of trading on their political influence for a lucrative, but no-show job and off-the-books construction work completed on the couple's Baltimore County home."

Bromwell, a powerful Democrat who represented areas of Baltimore County, was leveled a few weeks ago with a 30-count fraud and corruption indictment. The indictment claims, among other things, Bromwell planned to retire from his seat in 2000, but a $192,923 payment from the mechanical contracting firm Poole and Kent convinced him to remain a Senator. The company used Bromwell to influence state contracts.
