Steele is Black
from The League: Reassembled
Big news today: Republican Lt. Gov Michael Steele is black.
Everyone's talking about it. The Baltimore Sun has an article describing the fallout from a Washington Times story. The issue was a major topic of conversation this afternoon on WYPR's "News Roundup with Anthony McCarthy" and other talk radio outlets.
The impetus for all the buzz were comments made by several Democratic leaders quoted in the Times story saying that Steele is not representative of black Marylanders. Pundits and GOP officials have denounced the remarks as inappropriately racial.
We at The League stand with those who call for the Democratic Party to stop using race as an issue in the US Senate campaign, in which Steele is a candidate.
First of all, lets make one thing clear: the remarks were accurate. Steele does not represent the views of black Marylanders. Its not just his party affiliation; its his positions on substantive policy issues impacting the black community.
But its exactly for this reason that Democrats should keep their mouths shut about Steele's pigmentation. When they make these comments, that's all the media talks about. By pointing out that Steele is a black man who doesn't black voters, everyone just focuses on the fact that Steele is a black man and ignores the part about his policy positions.
If Democrats want to win this election (especially if its Steele versus white Cardin, not black Mfume), they need to make this campaign about policy, not race. Black voters will cast their ballots against Steele is they feel he will not serve them in Washington. If Democrats allow the media to discuss only Steele's race, then voters will only know that he is a black man and will be far more inclined to vote for him.
Our advice to the Democrats: shut up about Steele's race. Its not that your comments aren't accurate, its that they're politically damaging.

What is the REAL, but unstated, reason Democrats hate Michael Steele enough to engage in a racist, hate campaign against him?
FEAR and a desperate need to distract the press and the public from focusing on how the Democrats have sold Maryland Blacks down the river.
Michael Steele is a native of, and lives in, Prince George's County, Maryland.
EVERY county and state level elected official in Prince George's County is a Democrat.
The majority of them are Black.
Half of the non-Black minority are Hispanic.
Top school adminsitrators are predominately Black.
If you believe the Democrat's rhetoric, you would expect Prince George's County to be a paradise, especially for "minorities."
You would be wrong.
Prince George's County's rapidly increasing murder rate is second highest in Maryland and the highest in the Washington, DC, suburbs.
Prince George's County's schools are the second worst in Maryland and the worst in the Washington, DC, suburbs. The Black school chief recently resigned while being investigated by the FBI; one of his
top assistants ($130,000 per year) has just been convicted on federal drug laundering charges and has been indicted on witness tampering charges.
Prince George's County has more car thefts and violent carjackings than all the rest of Maryland and the DC suburbs put together.
Attacking Michael Steele is just part of the Democrats scheme to distract the public and the press from their ongoing abysmal failure to either protect or educate the people of Prince George's County.
Unfortunately, the GOP will not field, much less effectively support, respectable alternatives to the failing Prince George's County Democrats.
