Steele Democrat On the Air

Michael Steele has put alot of effort into making sure voters don't know the former head of the Maryland Republican Party is, in fact, a Republican. Not only has the Lt. Governor avoided party affiliation, he's even attempted to confuse Marylanders into thinking he is a Democrat. His campaign issued a bumper sticker that simply reads "Steele Democrat."

Sure, it's dishonest. But it's also smart politics in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans three-to-one and only 30 percent approve of President Bush.

Hopefully, voters will be sophisticated enough to see through the ploy. Steele is very much a Republican: he supports President Bush on the Iraq war, opposes abortion and stem cell research and embraces inhumane economic policies. Yet it seems all of this slipped past one major media outlet that bought into the whole "Steele Democrat" sham.

Is it impolitic of me to note that even though Mr. Steele is in Temple Hills MD in Prince Georges County campaigning furiously for black votes that everyone in the picture behind him appears to be suspiciously white?

Democrats do not outnumber Republicans 3-1. In fact, it's now less than 2-1 (55.1%-28.9%).
