NOW wants men...

In the recent past, I've tried hard to fathom NOW's joint endorsement of Valerie Ervin and Hans Riemer for the same seat on the Montgomery county council.

Last night, I received a call from robo-Duchy Tractenberg, President of Maryland NOW and County Council candidate, encouraging me to vote for Peter Franchot for state comptroller.

"Say what?", I shouted into the phone.

Excuse me, Duchy, did you realize there is an accomplished woman also running for that office? If you weren't paying attention, Janet Owens is the
County Executive of Anne Arundel County. Her election as comptroller would mean for the first time in Maryland history a woman would hold that office. Women would hold a majority on the Board of Public Works, the constitutional triumvirate that actually runs the state.

I'm left with the sinking feeling that Maryland NOW is too busy trading political favors to remember its role as an advocate for women.

The damage that Janet Owens would wreck on Maryland does not balance out whatever good would come from having a woman elected to this position for the first time in Maryland history.

There is a reason why we call her the Queen of Sprawl in Anne Arundel county.

Wasn't Owens considered a little too close to Erlich? Better to have a real Democrat in the office than a conservative woman for the sake of gender equity. If she was progressive, than yeah sure, we'd like to see better female representation in the state. But if she isn't than she isn't the person and this office isn't the area for making a statement about woman in politics.
