Most Maryland Reps Vote For Telcos - The People Lose!

On Thursday night, the House of Representatives shot down internet neutrality. This was an amendment by Markey to prevent the telcos from balkanizing the internet by providing services to some preferred customers faster than they provide them to others. This was the status quo up until last summer. Kevin Drum gives a good summary of what happened. Sadly, the majority of Maryland's congressmen, including half of the Dems and all of the Repubs, prefer telco money to preserving free interchange on the internet. Here's the Results.

Seems To Prefer That Verizon And Comcast Dictate
What You Can See Over The Internet

Bartlett (R)
Cummings (D)
Gilchrist (R)
Ruppersberger (D)
Wynn (D)

Voting for Net Neutrality

Cardin (D)
Hoyer (D)
Van Hollen (D)

Now, there may be chances for these legislators to correct themselves. The Senate Bill is coming up, and the issue is not yet resolved. It is time to make some noise, and hold them accountable. Unfortunately, Ruppersberger and Cummings are running unopposed this year - opposition could make them remember where they come from. I fear that five of our Congressmen may feel more accountable to the telco lobby than to the people.

I don't think you're gonna see much of anybody "making some noise." And even if a few people do, the Congressmen are not gonna rally against a measure they themselves supported. Talk about flipflopping.

Ok, then, well I guess the fight is over. The internet will look like Fox News, and we can all go home.

Geez, this is only one bill, there's more to come - the fight over net neutrality is only beginning. I see no reason to concede defeat. But if nobody does anything, telco money wins every time.
