Is Comptroller Off His Rocker?

Democratic Maryland Comptroller William Donald Schaefer has been outspoken throughout his half-century of public service. Whether as a top official in Baltimore or the state, Schaefer has never been afraid to say what's on his mind, periodically attracting national headlines.

But his recent words and behavior go beyond any line that even he refrained from crossing during his career. A month after Schaefer sexually harassed a young gubernatorial aide at a Board of Public Works meeting, the Washington Post ran an article today listing some very peculiar behavior at yesterday's meeting. The Comptroller embarked on a "half-hour tirade that left [Republican Gov. Robert] Ehrlich alternately stunned and irritated." He interrupted a conversation between Ehrlich and Democratic State Treasurer Nancy Kopp. He "needled administration officials about even the most routine agenda items." The Comptroller told a present Baltimore Sun reporter she's a "cute little girl." And, while leaving, he yelled "Boo! Boo!" at a portrait of former Gov. Paris Glendening.
