NOW makes a pass at District 5...
...and fumbles the ball.
Apparently deciding its too close to call in Montgomery County's District 5 Council race, Montgomery NOW and Maryland NOW have endorsed both Valerie Ervin and Hans Riemer for the Democratic primary.
A braver choice for the state and local NOWs would have been a stand for equal representation on the County Council. At the moment, only two of the nine are women.
NOW's statement of purpose is: "Our purpose is to take action to bring women into full participation in society – sharing equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities with men, while living free from discrimination."
One would think a group with this raison d'être could summon the courage to actually endorse a woman in a contested race. I wonder what else went into the black box for this outcome to be produced.
Maybe this explains why Montgomery Women was formed...
